Cyclone! Week #19 šŸ„„šŸ„‡šŸ–

August 15, 2022

Hi,

This week was great, but we got hit by a Cyclone it was wild. I've never seen so much rain in my life. Got to about ankle/shin high where I was but right on the coast in the Sistersā€™ area it was close to knee deep people said. Also sadly, we left our back door open and some windows and our kitchen and study room flooded. Oh that was a jolley surprise to come home to. I'll put a video below of our kitchen haha. But ya this week was just full of so much rain I was sopping wet for about 3 days. Can't wait for the 100% chance of rain Wednesday and Thursday this weekšŸ’Æ

Also, I painted Brenda's bike and I've never seen someone more stoked for my mediocre painting skills. She was asking if I worked in a place that paints things before the mission, and was so hyped to show all her friends.

Also, we put Sergio and Lorrany on date!! The family of Lorrany has been taught for 1 year and we finally are making plans for them to be married wooooo. And we were like wait, why haven't we baptized Lorrany she's been taught everything and wants to be baptized hahaha. So this Sunday after church is her baptism! Also, Sergio man I love this kid he lives a solid 30 min walk from the bus stop then another 30 min by bus to the church. He walked alone to the bus stop where we met him and was so stoked to go to church again. We taught his family this week and his Mom was super receptive. We are baptizing Sergio on the 28th.

Solid week, Pray for: Maria and her family, Sergio, Luzia and her family, and Eliane.

Thanks for all the love and prayers!

Week #18 šŸ˜ŒšŸ˜€

This week was great. We had Zone Conference and it was fun seeing all the homies from the old zone. President really focused on how the field is white and ready for us to harvest. We need to just work hard every single day and gather his sheep. I'm stoked to have someone that loves to work.

This week I gave a member a priesthood blessing and she asked me to do it in English cause she can understand quite a bit. Afterward, she said I literally said word for word a part of her patriarchal blessing. The Spirit was flowing big time.

Also we are helping Luzia and Adenilson get married so they can be baptized. Usually takes about a month so well be working with them and preparing I'm excited. It has been pouring rain the past 3 days and when it rains here no one leaves their house or wants to come to church. Makes it hard to do missionary work, but we keep goin.

I'm staying with Elder Lima another transfer I'm excited to see what the future holds.šŸ˜€

Mosiah 26: 20 Thou art my servant; and I covenant with thee that thou shalt have eternal life; and thou shalt serve me and go forth in my name, and shalt gather together my sheep.

21 And he that will hear my voice shall be my sheep; and him shall ye receive into the church, and him will I also receive.

Pres. shared this scripture, it was super powerful. We are all his servants, this week try to gather his sheep!

Transferred! Ouro Fino - Week #17

August 1, 2022

Hello!

I got emergency transferred to a new area because the mish had some problems. Ended ā€œtraining" 2 weeks early.šŸ˜ I'm pretty far out in a city called ParanaguĆ”. My new area is called Ouro Fino. We got new bikes this week woohoo!

My new comp is Elder Lima, heā€™s a Brazilian and he's great. He loves working and talking to every single person in the street so I'm getting some super good Portuguese practice in. This area is pretty poor and it's super hard to get people to church, but we'll see what we can do out here I'm excited. We taught two boys we found Vitor and Mateus and they are 13. Yesterday we taught them and Vitor's entire family. It started out with Vitor's whole family drinking and blasting music, but when we started talking about Joseph Smith the music turned off without us asking, and the Spirit was flowing. Then when we started bearing testimony the entire family came over reverently and listened to our message. Finally when I was giving the closing prayer the kids and everything was so quiet and peaceful. The presence of the Spirit was so calming and powerful. It was crazy. We are gonna teach them again Thursday.

Also it was Elder Lima's 21st bday today HBD!šŸ˜šŸ˜‚

It's kinda rough moving to a new area and adjusting, but I'm super excited to be out here.

"Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good; ā€¦" Alma 37:37

Love you all

Week #16 - 4ļøāƒ£ months!šŸ™‚

Hello,

This week was pretty sweet here in Alfonso Pena. I got to baptize JosĆ© JĆŗlio yew!!!! He's trying to move to the States again in the next 2-3 years and he said maybe he'd move to Utah. I'm stoked! Also the Dragon really was throwing us some trials leading up to the baptism so firstly, we were filling the font at our church when all of a sudden the water just went to a trickle and I'm like what the... are the other Elders here and they turned off the water to mess with us? I go look and no one is there then I go to the bathroom real quick and there's just no water in the toilets or coming out of the sinks. I'm just holy frick the serpent of course he's causing a ruckus! So I grabbed a bucket and went into the cleaning room and started filling it cause the water worked there, then it stopped. And E. Cabral was calling Bishop and Presidente trying to figure out why the water was off. Then I went to the kitchen and the water was pumping out of the faucet so I grabbed 2 buckets and was swapping them and started filling the font by hand. Then after about 45 min of that the water stopped in the kitchen too.

So next we called the Sisters because they have a font at their ward building. And the Sisters were having their ward festa so they were like probably can't do it here sorry. Then they called back and said we started the fontā€¦ our bishop said we'll turn off the music when you baptize him. So we went to their chapel and I baptized JosĆ© in a freezing cold font and he was stoked because he said "it's like I'm in the River Jordan, Jesus and John the Baptist didn't heat their water." Gosh I love this guy always happy and positive!

Little homie Thyago (pronounced Chee-ah-go) loves Naruto and he let me wear his extra head band and take a picture with him. His parents are inactive and we're trying to get them back. This week we're gonna put him on date!

We also had probably the most spiritual lesson I've had yet, in Borda do Campo at a new referral we visited. I was just able to teach so naturally and could feel the Spirit working through me don't really know how to describe it.

Ya it was a great week!

Hope you all are doing good, thanks for all the love and prayers.

Interview with Presidente Snyder - Week #15

Hi Everyone,

This is Mama Lynda. Ryker ran out of time on Monday and asked if I would send out a quick update to everyone, and not be ā€œcringeā€.šŸ˜‚ Hahaha Iā€™ll try my best.

The highlight of Elder Roskelleyā€™s week was traveling to the mission office and having an interview with his new Mission President. Presidente Snyder spent a solid hour sharing life experiences, encouraging and getting to know Ryker. Ryker said it was incredible and he came away from that meeting inspired and even more excited about the work they are doing, because of President Snyder's goals and vision for the Curitiba South mission. Ryker was also able to talk to Sister Snyder for a while, as he was waiting for his interview and said she is amazing and soo loving!! He genuinely LOVES the Snyder's and feels blessed that they will be his mission leaders for the rest of his mission.

The other exciting news is. . . they are preparing to baptize Jose Julio this week!

Elder Roskelley loves you all and is very grateful for all of the prayers and love! (and so are we!ā¤ļø)

Week #14 šŸ«‚šŸŒŠšŸŒŠšŸŽ‰šŸŽ‚

Hi,

This week was a W honestly! We baptized 2 little homies Adixom and Hanslyn and man it was incredible!!!

To start it made me sooooo sad because Adixom's family is super Catholic and they don't have any interest but his older brother is baptized and is kinda his only support. So literally none of his family came to his baptism and it broke my heart. But still this little 10 year old was full of pure joy to be baptized. And we baptized him on my birthday which was the coolest "present" I've ever gotten!

Next I gotta baptize Hanslyn and man she is super shy but incredible. She speaks perfect English so she only would talk to me and I taught her all the lessons in English. It was so nice I could just speak effortlessly! But she killed it and didn't even seem nervous yesterday.

We have JosĆ© JĆŗlio this coming week to be baptized and man he is so prepared! At church he told me he re-read like 3 of the pamphlets and read the chapters we asked him to read. Gosh I love this guy! He also does Tae Kwon Do so this week he was teaching me a few ways to take people down it was hilarious.

This guy named ClĆ³vis that hasn't responded to us in about a month finally responded when I texted him about coming to Sacrament meeting! He and his wife came and after they left she texted us and said I feel I need to be baptized can you guys help me do that. I was like what the heck am I reading this rightšŸ˜‚?! So we are going to teach them this week and we'll see how things go!

As you guys know it was my birthday this week and I honestly thought it might suck cause I'm in a different country, but it was actually pretty dang enjoyable. The First Counselor in the Stake Presidency and his wife (Martinā€™s) gave me a birthday present and she made me doughnuts and the cinnamon roll type things gosh they were so tasty. Man I don't know how I got so blessed with these incredible members but they are so thoughtful and made it great day! Also Elder Cabral bought me a McFlurry so fire!

Ya this week was super good hope you all are doing good. Thank you for all the b-day wishes it meant a lot!!!!!!!

Week #13 šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

This week was sweet and we got a new Mission President too!

Started off we had Dirlei's baptism and it was so cool his son was able to baptize him!

This week I went on Splits with Elder Cardon and he's such a homie. It was really nice to speak in English all day and not have to struggle to say anything. Hahah We actually taught this little girl from the Philippines in English which was so chill I could just teach. I also taught her a couple of the commandments a few days ago. We have her on date to be baptized Sunday I'm so stoked because I might be able to baptize her in English! We shall see.

Also we have Adixom on date for the 9th so I might get a birthdaytizm haha that would be the sickest birthday! Making covenants and eating birthday cake all in one dayšŸ¤žšŸ¤žšŸ¤ž

I hope you all had a lit 4th of July mine was actually way fun even tho I didn't see fireworks our entire mission got together because we got a new President. Man it was so fun and amazing because our President only speaks English and Spanish so the whole day was in English and man I learned so much! I'm stoked for the time I'm gonna spend with President and Sister Snyder they already seem super fun! It was cool as they were sharing things with us that the Apostles taught them about 1 week ago in the Provo MTC the Spirit that filled the chapel was insane!

Also on the way to the chapel today I found this random birthday cake in the bushes and Elder Cabral was tripping, he's like no way this is no coincidence of course there's a birthday cake here what?! There's a pic down below of it.

I was just reading in Mosiah 2 and here's a verse I liked: Mosiah 2:20

"I say unto you, my brethren, that if you should render all the thanks and praise which your whole soul has power to possess, to that God who has created you, and has kept and preserved you, and has caused that ye should rejoice, and has granted that ye should live in peace with one another."

Hope you all have a fire week

Three months down! Week #12 šŸ™šŸ»šŸ§‚

This week was money, man the Lord really hit me with blessings big time this week.

We ate lunch with President Vagner again and we were talking about soccer and how everyone is getting stoked for the World Cup. And he just gave me a jersey of his favorite team so clutch!

Then we got to go to the Curitiba temple with our ward and did baptisms and confirmations and man it was crazy doing temple work in a different language, but the Spirit was so strong. As a whole ward we did 182 namesšŸ˜‚! It was crazy the amount of work we were able to do! All of the names were for a family in our ward too. I got baptized like 25 times and confirmed probably 60 names, so incredible. Afterward we went and got pizza and Bishop clutched up and brought us 3 mega pizzas.

We also finally confirmed Henrique and Henry on Sunday (The Venezuelan boys we baptized). It was so cool and the Spirit was super strong.

As we were walking to a lesson we saw a woman with 2 dogs walking in the distance. Well, so we thought! She had a pig on a leash as a petšŸ˜‚! I was dying laughing and the pig's name is "Pancake" hahaha I don't know why it's so funny to me but I got a picture with it.

Also we are re-baptizing a guy tomorrow, who was excommunicated so yoooo another baptism. He's the husband of the lady that had us over for her Birthday last week. We've been teaching him a little and Bishop gave the green light.

JosĆ© JĆŗlio should be baptized this Saturday woooooooo man I love this guy he's a Carpenter and he loves showing me his tools and little things he makes it's sick!

Ohhhh and when we were at the bus stop a couple nights ago a rock band was playing right next to the bus stop. I gotta listen to some sick Brazilian Rock for 30 minutes and watch some crazy drunk people go crazy!! So funny

Good stuff! I get a new Mission President this next week so my Pday will be on Tuesday so I'll send an email then! Sad to see the Oldham's go!šŸ˜Ŗ

On a spiritual note here's a scripture:

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matthew 5:16

I invite you all to go be a light unto the world this week and shine by serving others!

Elder Ryker Roskelley4ļøāƒ£

šŸ”‰šŸ˜ - Week #11

Hello, this week was a great one!

Started off by going on Splits with Eldet Sampaio and man this kid is hilarious! He lived in Sandy, UT for 2 years before the mission (he's a Brazilian) so he speaks good English and it was nice just talking about home and seeing a different area!

Next we have been teaching my homie JosĆ© JĆŗlio and he's progressing super well just gotta get him off that coffee. Everyone here drinks coffee even the 10 yr old kid Adixom we're teaching and it's such a challenge for them to stop haha. But we're going back to JosĆ©'s tomorrow so we'll see what happens. We have him on date to be baptized this Saturday.

Also we have new investigators in BC that are also super cool (Maria e Donizete) they have like 10 kittens and 4 puppies and they are so cute. I'm always just playing with the kittens it's awesome. They are doing great we'll see where things go. They always feed us yummy food when we go over so we love going to their house.

Also went to the Mall and got a nice platter of sushi with a member (Thalyta) and holy the sushi was shockingly pretty tasty I was surprised. And the Malls here are just super nice like The States it was cool walking around I felt like I teleported to The States for an hour!4ļøāƒ£

One of our favorite members' birthday was on Sunday and she had us over to eat this money strawberry cake with her family too!

Got transfer news as well and I'm staying with Elder Cabral for another transfer. So fire I'm excited he's really helping me with my Portuguese and I'm seeing some good progress because of his help!

Also the little kids we baptized last week have a chicken that had a baby. And they took the chick and chicken out and the stray dogs they feed were trying to eat the chicken it was crazy. I had to kick the dog pretty hard so it would let go hahaha I thought the chicken was dead for sure. It was hilarious the kids were goin wild!

Scrip: Psalms 34:8 "O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.ā€

I'm really learning a lot out here and know that I am blessed when I trust the Lord, He's got everything under control. Sometimes we need to worry less and trust more!

Yo! Week #10

Yo,

This week was great. It was another cold one and I woke up this morning seeing my breathe, but I got my first Baptism!!

Elder Cabral and I baptized these 2 brothers from Venezuela. (ages 11 & 9) It was such an incredible day! I was able to baptize Henry (9) and man I've never seen someone more excited for Baptism. Just watching these kids grow and learn about this gospel was fire!

So at the Branch they live in there's no font so we have to make a swimming pool hahaha. And that night it was 3Ā°C so the water was soooo cold. We called an audible and Baptized them in the Afonso Pena chapel that has heated water. Man I'm happy we made that change. Also I gave a talk in church, but since it was super cold not very many people came to church so there wasnā€™t too big of a crowd. "Dang Itā€ šŸ‘šŸ»

Weā€™ve got 2 more people on date this week one is Samanta she works at the little McDonald's ice cream shop out front of the supermarket so every time we go to get groceries we also stop by and share a message it's great. Also JosĆ© JĆŗlio is on date and man I love this guy! He had a work Visa and lived in Connecticut for 7 years so he speaks super good English and I get to talk to him it's the best hahah. He loves the Celtics too so he always tells me how the NBA Finals are going hahaha. He was a carpenter in the States so he built a sweet house here and he has this Lounger from Costco and he lets me recline in it and man that thing is comfy.

We had a new missionaries conference and I got to see all the homies I came in with and Sister Sands(from my MTC district) again. It was fun hanging out with everyone and catchin up!

My Portuguese is improving every day it's just so fun being out here. Also went on Splits with Elder Doman and we got pizza and found some new people to teach this week. All in all a fire week... hope you all are great!

Pray4 : Samanta, Adixom, JosĆ© JĆŗlio

Anotha - Week #9

Hi.

This week was great sorry I don't have time to write we were at some investigators making potstickers hahah they we're delicious.

We had Zone Conference this week and man I'm in a super solid mission it was fun making new friends.

Also this member that made us lunch had us help him cut some nice lumber with his epic 2 man saw!!!

Love you all!

Elder Roskelley

ryker.roskelley@missionary.org

p.s. From Mama Lynda. . . Ryker was telling us how much he LOVED Zone Conference. The thing that stood out to me was. . . (I hope I remember this correctly) apparently in the Portuguese language, there is not an exact translation for the word ā€œfloodā€? So, his amazing mission president, President David Oldham (Ryker adores him and his wife Sis. Teresa Oldham). . . came up with a word for ā€œfloodā€ . . . DILUVIAR. As you can see from the banner in the photo below. . . that is their mission motto. Presidente Oldham talked repeatedly about the need to flood the mission with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. . . and flood the earth with the Gospel! Love that!! #DILUVIAR

Hello my supporters - Week #8

Hello my supporters,

If you don't have enough time to read this email at least peek this scripture:

D&C 24:8 "Be patient in afflictions, for thou shalt have many; but endure them, for, lo, I am with thee, even unto the end of thy days."

This week was better than the last for sure! I got to eat more delicious food and I ate some Chick fil A sauce that my mom sent me hahaha. I'm finally understanding a bit too.

To start we had a funky experience teaching this old lady that was a referral after church yesterday. We went over and they we're super nice then her son Pablo came over and was listening and once we finishing talking about the Restoration he just started going in on how that's all fraud and we are some false garbage. After 20 minutes of that he just singled me out and was like how could you think Joseph Smith is a prophet! There's no need for more prophets! He made up that Book! Hahaha thatā€™s about all I got out of the 4-5 minutes he yelled at me. Then my comp said calm down man he's only been here for 1 week. He can't understand you. Man the look on that guy's face. He was just instantly apologizing then they gave us the best chocolate cake I think I've ever had. Blessings from NOT being able to understand Portuguese haha! Who knew. Just a great memory.

On a good note I understood a good bit of Sacrament meeting this week and 2nd hour of Church. Words are starting to click. Also we took this kid some extra church clothes that we had. He got baptized about 3 weeks ago and he wasnā€™t home so we taught his family and sang "God be with you till we meet again" to them in English. The Spirit was so strong and after we finished singing the Mom said "I can see God is in and with you guys can you please return to our house this week, please." So we are going back Friday. I'll keep you guys updated.

Well all in all this week was much better. I'm truly seeing the Lordā€™s hand is in every single part of my life.

Love you all! Thank you for all your love.

First week in the mission field (Alfonso Pena) - Week #7

Oi friends and family,

Gotta make this brief kinda lost track of time today. But uhh this first week was pretty rough hahaha. Nothing like being in a foreign land not being able to speak, but I've also loved it so much.

It's hard going from being a talkative person to zero, but I lucked out with my first comp. He's from Brasilia (the Capitol of Brazil) but he can understand English and speak a little bit too which is super helpful. He's kinda like a walking dictionary for me hahaha. The Man (Elder Cabral) is so patient and is really helping me improve my Portuguese.

I'm very excited to be in the field finally made it here safely. One thing that caught me by surprise was how cold it is here. It was 1-2Ā°C (33-35* F) the first couple nights and gosh I'm glad I brought a puffy coat I hardly take it off šŸ˜‚šŸ¤ž. When we landed in Curitiba last Tuesday May 17, Presidente Oldham took us straight to the Curitiba Temple which was so nice! Itā€™s such beautiful temple and the Oldhamā€™s are the greatest most loving people. They are from American Fork, UT. I love them so much already.

The members here are so amazing and so kind they just laugh at me cause I don't understand much it's great. They feed us every day and we've had some bomb burgers, churrasco (Brazilian Barbeque), and other stuff I don't remember the names of.

Quick Scripture: D&C 6:20 "...Be faithful and diligent in keeping the commandments of God, and I will encircle thee in the arms of my love."

All in all this was a great first week with lots of ups and downs but I can't wait to bless the people of Brazil!

Have a good one!!!

Week #6

No letter from Ryker this week since he left the CTM and has been traveling/getting situated in his first area in the field, with his trainer. But hereā€™s a sweet tender mercy for you. . . we have some friends in our ward here in Cedar Hills (Paskettā€™s) who had a trip planned to Brazil, to take their older son who served his mission in Rio de Janeiro. . . to the Rio Temple dedication. After that, they flew down to SĆ£o Paulo to visit Jenny Millerā€™s (our bishopā€™s wife) Sister & Brother-in-Law, who are the Campinas Mission Leaders. Anyway. . . I was needing to get another pair of shoes (not cheap!) and a few other items to Ryker, as an early Birthday present. . . and they offered to take the package to Ryker! They just so happened to show up at the SĆ£o Paulo CTM on Rykerā€™s LAST DAY in the CTM!!! President & Sister Horsley also delivered homemade cookies and a big jar of peanut butter to Ryker - SOO KIND!! Not only was it peace of mind being able to get the package hand delivered. . . Bro. Paskett was also able to call their son Kyle, (who is also serving in Brazil, and Ryker was buddies with in high school) so Ryker could talk to Kyle, who had been serving for 6 months longer than Ryker. It REALLY meant A LOT to Ryker to be able to connect with Kyle, who gave him lots of great advice and helped calm Rykerā€™s nerves, as he was getting ready to fly to his first area in the mission field. Such incredible timing. . . sweetest tender mercy. Just another witness to Ryker that Heavenly Father is SO aware of him. . . and in the tiniest of details of his life! Of ALL of our lives!! Humbling indeed! SOO SOOO grateful!!!

Elder Kyle Paskett & Ryker - connecting via Facebook Messenger, since it was Kyleā€™s P-day. SO fun!!

šŸ‘‹ Week #5

Hello,

This last week was super good. To start on Sunday I gave my first Priesthood blessing to a Sister and the Spirit was indescribable. Probably the most spiritual moment I've had in my life. It was amazing.

Next, today we went to the SĆ£o Paulo temple again. It was a super good temple day until we walked out after our session to see Elder Gary E. Stevenson! He was just chilling on the temple grounds shaking all the missionaries' hands. It was super spiritual and cool seeing one of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. I must be living right if I can hit the Lord's house and see one of his Apostles in the same day. So I'm feeling great right now. The Lord's hand is in everything.

I head to the field on Tuesday! Can't wait to get thrown into it! Only 4 more days in the CTM forever.

12 ā€œThis is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.ā€ John 15:12

Just love everyone.

First email - CTMšŸ‡§šŸ‡· (Centro de Treinamento MissionĆ”rio)

Ola amigos,

Twenty six days in. First email and first week in the Brazil CTM was tough but such an awesome learning experience! It was so fun finally being able to meet my companions and district in person. They are all such solid individuals.

The CTM is not really what I had expected it to be hahaha. It's just a 6 story building in the middle of SĆ£o Paulo that is fenced in with barbed wire. Elder Adam's first thought he said was this is like a Missionary Juvy hahaha had me dying. But I do get to play basketball everyday for an hour so I'm happy. When we got dropped off at the CTM entrance last Thursday no one greeted us so we just wandered around for about 40 minutes and finally the people found us and showed us our room hahaha. I've realized you just gotta go with the flow around here cause everyone is so relaxed. We also didn't get our schedule till the 3rd day so the first few days were pure confusion.

I'll tell you what a mission ain't easy and learning Portuguese is not easy. I've been struggling to understand anything and basically everyone only speaks Portuguese. After many prayers and a lot of faith I've realized I just need to put my faith in the Lord and trust in Him and His power. Without Him we are nothing. This past week has been one of the most difficult/spiritually powerful weeks of my life, but I've found that when I give Him my best He provides the rest.

President David L. Beck (CTM President) spoke to us last night and it was really uplifting. In his talk he said "To know of Jesus Christ is one thing, but getting to personally know Him is everything." That hit me. A personal testimony is everything. He also emphasized that there is simply no better place for any of us to be, than on a mission. I believe that! I know I am where I'm supposed to be and I can't wait to serve the people of Brasil.

Also who knew there are so many genuinely kind people in this world. The Brazilians are the most genuine and friendly people ever. Even though it's hard to understand each other I've been able to create so many strong relationships with the people here within the span of 7-8 days. It's lit!

Love you all!! Hope everyone is doing well! Here's some chill pictures from the Campinas temple today and others from throughout the week.

Love,

So it BEGINS. . . with Home MTC!

This is Mama Lynda. . . I will forever CHERISH these two weeks that we had Elder Ryker in our home, studying. learning, and preparing to leave for the Brazil CTM! [Centro de Treinamento MissionƔrio}. The Spirit that accompanied our newly ordained Elder & recently set-apart full-time missionary was tangible. I LOVED being able to hear all about the lessons he was learning with his District, when he came out of his study room on break! His excitement, enthusiasm and wonder at everything he was learning was VERY sweet to be a part of and witness. I also loved being home to make him a snack or lunch between classes. . . and having him so willing to open up and share everything he was learning and experiencing, as his testimony was growing and being strengthened, was a treasure!

During Rykerā€™s 1st weekend of Home MTC. . . we had the privilege of taking him with us to Washington D.C. Temple (April 8-10) before the Open House began for the general public. The temple had been closed for 4 years, undergoing a major renovation, that Roscoeā€™s (Rykerā€™s dad) company (R&R Environmental) was involved with. What an honor! This trip had been planned, taking the R&R partners, project team & spouses out to see the temple, way before Ryker got his mission call. So, of course we HAD to take him with us. We couldnā€™t just leave him home alone. . . so it was perfect! The lead project manager over the entire D.C. Temple renovation gave our group a private tour of the temple. It was absolutely incredible being the ONLY people in the entire temple. The Spirit was SO strong inside, even though it had not been re-dedicated yet. . . it was very special! Just watching Rykerā€™s reaction, knowing what a privilege it was to be there was so sweet. We were all struck by the remarkable detail, the gorgeous finishes, and the incredible artwork throughout the entire temple. Ryker felt a connection to that temple, and kept saying that he REALLY wanted to come back to the D.C. Temple after his mission and do a bunch of temple work for our ancestors. It was an unforgettable experience!

FAREWELL ELDER ROSKELLEY

It was so wonderful to hear Elder Roskelley speak in church (Manila Creek 8th Ward in Cedar Hills, UT) on March 27, 2022. Ryker gave a very nice, spirit-filled, heartfelt talk titled ā€œExperiences in my life that have helped prepare me to serve a missionā€, sharing several personal experiences he has had while growing up . . . here is his talk:

ā€œHello Brother and Sistersā€¦ for those of you who donā€™t know me I am Ryker Roskelley. My parents and I moved into my grandparents, the Roskelleyā€™s basement about a year ago and it has been awesome being in this ward. I have been attending BYU these last two semesters and that is probably why I am not a very familiar face, but I am so glad that I am a part of this wardā€¦ it is incredible. Iā€™ve been assigned to labor in the Brazil, Curitiba South mission and I start Home MTC training on April 4th for 2 weeks, then on April 20th I go to the Brazil MTC for another 4 weeks. When I opened my call, I was stoked to see Brazil because my older brother Porter served in Brazil as well, so I canā€™t wait to learn Portuguese and be able to converse with him. When people find out where I am going, everyone seems to say that Curitiba is the city everyone wants to serve in, and I am super excited because the weather there is apparently comparable to San Diego weather. It seems like the perfect place for me serve.

Today I was asked to talk about experiences in my life that have prepared me to serve a mission. When I received this topic, I was really excited because I feel very blessed that Iā€™ve had many experience in my life that have helped prepared me for a mission. I found a great LIAHONA article that lists several things to help prepare for a mission. There are 4 things that really stood out to me from the article. The first point is the importance of Communication. A few years ago, I was fortunate to have my first high school job at Taco Time. At this job, most of the time I was communicating with others while running the drive thru and lobby area. This really prepared me and showed me how to make conversation with complete strangers. In Preach my Gospel, section 9 it talks about how to find people to teach, it says (quote) ā€œNothing happens in missionary work until you find someone to teach. Talk with as many people as you can each day. It is natural to be somewhat apprehensive about talking to people, but you can pray for the faith and strength to be more bold in opening your mouth to proclaim the restored gospel.ā€. I found this to be true and it is so important to trust the Spirit to put into your heart and mind who and what to teach. I feel it is important to be as authentic as possible and offer to help people in any way I can. Also, I have been fortunate enough to travel throughout the world and meet many different people and make friendships through communication. When I moved into the dorms at BYU, I made a goal to talk to a new person every day. And I have created great and lasting friendships by doing so, which I feel has really prepared me to be able to talk to complete strangers more easily, when I get to the mission field.

The second point I like that the article talks about is Finding Fine Friends. That is an understatementā€¦ I have been blessed with an incredible friend group. I have realized the blessings that have come by surrounding myself with great friends. We have definitely had our fair share of shenanigans over the years, but I love that weā€™ve always had each otherā€™s backs and always push each other to be our best. I am very grateful for the amazing examples they are to me. There are nearly 20 close friends currently serving or preparing to serve missions. An experience that stood out to me is when we all went on a Church History tour together called Origination, just a few days after we graduated. It was an incredible experience where I was able to watch our friendships and testimonies grow tremendously. A challenge we were given during the trip was to try and finish the Book of Mormon in the 2 weeks we were gone. I was able to witness our friendships grow stronger as we all studied the Lordā€™s words. Another opportunity that prepared me was going with my friends Jake Lindsley and TJ Wells to peopleā€™s homes, who couldnā€™t attend church, and administering the Sacrament to them. Being able to exercise my priesthood in this way, with my good friends, was very powerful and unifying. I am so grateful for this unique opportunity to serve members of our old ward, which strengthened the brotherhood that we have. Another experience that was very impactful, was doing temple baptisms at the Provo Temple with my good buddy Crew Jenkins, who I met in the dorms Fall Semester! Incidentally, Crew has been serving in the Brazil Curitiba Mission since January!  Crew had this incredible gift of magically finding available appointments. . . and then inviting the Sisters we ministered to, to do baptisms with us. Those days that we did temple baptisms were some of the most spiritual experiences I had during Fall Semester, and Iā€™m SOO grateful for Crew and his righteous example because it blessed my life immensely!. Iā€™m stoked that weā€™ll be serving our missions in the same city. . . but in different missions.

The most recent experience that made such an impact on me was when my friend Josh Biegel and I did an endowment session at the Mount Timpanogos temple just this last Tuesday. It was both of our 3rd time doing an endowment session and it was very strengthening knowing we have the same goals and desires, while spending time & learning together in the temple.

The third important point to help prepare for a mission isā€¦ Donā€™t Just Believe - Do. This means getting in the habit of going the extra mile, of sacrificing, of serving. Thatā€™s what missionary work is all about. My family members are strong believers in being a doerā€¦ and serving those in need. An example in my life is the humanitarian trips we would do in Tijuana, Mexico every spring break. One of the years, for my Eagle project, I decided to organize a donation drive around my neighborhood, and collected supplies for an orphanage we would visit each trip. My 13-year-old self was overwhelmed by the generosity of my friends, neighbors, and people I didnā€™t even know. We packed up hundreds of pounds of food, school supplies, and baby supplies.  It was such a blessing being able to hand deliver all the items I collected. The tearful reactions, and look on all the orphansā€™ faces was priceless and something my heart will never forget. There is a scripture that I have always loved, that I am putting on my mission plaque. The reference is: Mosiah chapter 7 verse 33 which says, ā€œBut if ye will turn to the Lord with full purpose of heart, and put your trust in him, and serve him with all diligence of mind, if ye do this, He will, according to his own will and pleasure, deliver you out of bondage. I love that this scripture promises that if we always remember to turn to the Lord. . . trust in and serve Him, He will deliver us.ā€  What a powerful promise!

The fourth point is. . . Build your Testimony. It says to practice telling people how you feel about the gospel. The more you do it, the more natural it will feel. I havenā€™t really been the best at sharing my testimony often, but I always feel incredible when I do. A memorable time when I bore my testimony was during Origination, while standing on the bank of the Susquehanna River, where the Priesthood was restored to the earth, through Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdrey. The Spirit was so tangible and bore witness to me that this indeed happened. While there, I was also able to receive many answers to my prayers. . .one being whether I should serve a mission. From that moment on, there was not a doubt in my mind that I needed to serve a mission, after my freshman year at BYU.  That experience gave me great comfort and peace, knowing I was following exactly what Heavenly Father wanted me to do.

President Russell M. Nelson said ā€œThe decision to serve a mission will shape the spiritual destiny of the missionary, his or her spouse, and their posterity for generations to come. A desire to serve is a natural outcome of oneā€™s conversion, worthiness, and preparation.ā€  Iā€™d say that pretty much sums it ALL UP!

I feel extremely blessed that Iā€™ve had so many powerful experiences that have helped shape me and better prepare me to serve a mission for the next 2 years.  I have felt Heavenly Fatherā€™s guidance every step of the way and I know the timing is PERFECT! I am super excited to serve the people of Brazil! Iā€™d like to bear my testimonyā€¦ā€¦ā€¦

In the NAME of Jesus Christ AMEN.ā€

Wise counsel, my 18 year old youngest son!  It was overwhelming to see the chapel completely packed (itā€™s the first time (since Covid-19) Iā€™ve seen them have to open up the very back curtain to the overflow section and set up several more rows of chairs) with so many friends, family members, leaders, coaches, beloved elementary school teachers from American Heritage School, etc.  Many loved ones who have influenced Rykerā€™s life in such an impactful way, which has helped shape him into the quietly confident and humble young man that he is today. It truly does "take a village..." we are humbled and very grateful for this incredibly loving and supportive ā€œnewā€ village in the Cedar Hills Manila Creek 8th Ward that weā€™ve been part of for the last year, since weā€™ve been living in my in-lawā€™s basement while we build our new home in Alpine.  What an honor to be surrounded by such a large concentration of the highest caliber of people. Well done Elder Roskelley. . . we sure love you!!
